The Domaine de Baraillon, run by the same family since 1748, is located in the best region of Bas-Armagnac, on the borders of the Gers and the Landes. The vineyard is planted on a sandy-silty soil, called "tawny sands", which gives its brandies their finesse.
This unique cask from the 1989 vintage, made from the distillation of the rarest and most sought-after Folle Blanche grape variety, yielded 288 bottles. Folle Blanche was the historic grape variety of Armagnac and Cognac before it was wiped out at the end of the 19th century by phylloxera, a parasite native to the United States. Giving the finest eaux-de-vie but sensitive and demanding, it represents today less than 2% of the Armagnac vineyard, that is to say only about 150 Ha!
After 32 years of ageing, the degree of distillation of 52% has naturally decreased to a little less than 45%, thanks to the humidity of the cellar making the alcohol evaporate more, bringing concentration and roundness.
For the label of this official bottling, we wanted to break the traditional codes of armagnac to propose a more modern and valorizing image. Armagnac being the only spirit to offer vintages over more than a century (128 years at Baraillon!), we had the idea of illustrating each selection by being inspired by an artistic trend of the decade (you will see the other variations with the future vintages).
TheAtelier Shiroï, based in Nantes, was in charge of the realization with talent. You will undoubtedly recognize the artist who inspired the illustration of the label of this 1989.
On the nose, this Bas-Armagnac grand cru expresses floral, dried fruit and undergrowth aromas, typical of the Folle Blanche grape. The mouth is ample and melted, with stewed fruits (mirabelle plum, prune) and pastry notes (panettone). The finish lingers on an elegant woody note.

A very nice example of pure folle-blanche Armagnac, with again a nice exuberance.
